Adoption Outreach: Other Mothers Rescue, 6/24 and 7/1, 1 – 5 PM

Award winning Rescue Other Mothers will bring bouncy kittens who want their forever home!  Other Mothers Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Inc., contributes toward the welfare of animals and people in the community by providing care, rehabilitation, and socialization of animals at a level that is not possible at most conventional shelters. Other Mothers rescues dog and cat moms and their litters from existing shelter facilities that are unable to provide for them due to the lack of space, staff, and the time requirements of infant care and recuperation from birthing. She seeks out qualified adoptive parents and partners with them as needed throughout the animal’s lifetime in order to ensure the best experience possible for both animal and owner.

Bio: Linda Carradine, the founder of Other Mothers, received the Diamond Collar Hero Award in 2006, presented by the Oregon Humane Society. Linda is the founder of Other Mothers Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation. After working as a volunteer animal parent for more than ten  years, Linda was determined to do more for newly born animals that were too young or too vulnerable to thrive in a shelter environment. The goal of Other Mothers is to care for these very young animals until they are ready to be adopted.

Animal Massage, 6/24, 5:30 – 7 PM, with Rubi Sullivan, Certified Animal Massage Therapist, from Heal Animal Massage Therapy, $25

Focused on preventative care, dog massage is part of a holistic approach to your pet’s health care. Massage is a gentle and non-invasive therapy that can relieve pain and stress. Whether you have a companion pet, agility dog, show animal, or service dog, massage is a great way to maintain your dog’s health and well-being, as well as regular veterinary visits.

After a day of romping at the day care or dog park, massage can help reduce stiffness and fatigue when they return home by increasing the circulation and flushing waste products from the muscle tissues. Massage can help your dog deal with the stress of boarding that they may experience while you’re away. Or, for your older dog, massage may be just what the doctor ordered. They can feel the effects of a good massage in their joints and immune system.

Massage is also great for those 4 legged friends living with cancer. Register  in advance at the store! There are only four slots for this class. Our customers rave about her massage classes!

Bio: Rubi is a graduate of the Northwest School of Animal Massage and is a certified and insured small animal massage practitioner. She holds a bachelor degree from Oregon State University as well. Her practice is in Portland, Oregon where she is also certified in Pet First Aid and CPR . She is a member of the International Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork.

“Oh My Dog!” How the Animals in My Life Transformed Me,
presented by Deborah Wood, 6/25, 6 – 7 PM, No charge

You probably read Deborah Wood’s pet column every Tuesday in The Oregonian. She’s not only Oregon’s most respected pet writer – she’s one of the nation’s most popular pet writers. She’s the author of eleven books and countless articles. She’s won stacks of awards for her writing.

What you may not know is that Deborah spent three years too sick to work after donating a kidney. She had no job and no prospects for one.

Then, in a four-month time period, she got two book contracts and a column in one of the nation’s most respected newspapers. Until that time, no one had paid her a penny to write anything.

What changed her life? A dog named Goldie (or, as Deborah describes her, “a fairy princess who came to earth in the cutest available costume that day”). Without Goldie, there would be no column and no books.

But Goldie isn’t the only dog who transformed Deborah’s life. Two years ago, she put her dog, Pogo, on a sensible diet. Then she looked down at her own plateful of spaghetti, and said out loud, “Deborah, you are a hypocrite.” She decided to take the same good care of herself that she gave to her dogs. Deborah went from a size 22 to a size 8 – and weighs almost exactly half of what she once did.

Come meet Deborah, and hear her talk about how the animals in her life transformed her. It’s a time to learn about this woman – and think about the animals that have transformed your life.

Events, Cont’d. page 3:

Bio: Deborah Wood has written the “Pet Talk” column for The Oregonian for over nine years. She is the author of eleven books, including Little Dogs: Training Your Pint-Sized Companion, one of the most popular dog training books of all time. Her writing has won many awards, including “Newspaper Person of the Year” from the Dog Writers Association of America.

She has trained dogs since she was 11 years old, and her 8-pound Papillon dogs regularly beat the big dogs at obedience trials. Her dogs have earned many titles and work on hand signals, find things by scent, and retrieve objects over obstacles. Her dog, Pogo, is a certified therapy dog; Deborah and Pogo have done volunteer visits for five years. Deborah had years of professional background in social service work, and is the former executive director of Oregon’s largest agency serving homeless people. Deborah is a graduate of the College of William and Mary.

Pet Nutrition Class, taught by Dr. Gaia Mather, Naturopathic Physician,
6/27, 6 PM, No charge

As a result of the recent pet food recalls, people are confused about what is now safe to feed their pets. Dr. Gaia Mather, Naturopathic Physician, presents a Pet Nutrition class that is going to help you sort it all out.

Bio: Dr. Gaia Mather is a native of Portland, Oregon.  She graduated from Portland State University in 1982, East-West College of Massage in 1983 and the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1990.  She brings her life-long love of nature and animals together as she teaches people ways to better care for their companion animals.

Bonnie Hays Small Animal Shelter, 6/28, 11 am – 2 pm

Susan Field, Public Affairs Officer for the Shelter, will join us to let us know how the shelter makes a difference to pets and people of Washington County, learn about volunteer opportunities, and pets waiting to be adopted.

The Washington County Animal Services & Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter provides care and protection for thousands of homeless, unwanted, abandoned and abused or neglected dogs and cats.

The shelter provides services to an estimated 80,000 dogs and 90,000 cats and their owners in Washington County, (727 square miles and a human population of approximately 488,000).

A portion of every dollar you spend at PetUtopia is donated to this shelter.

Pet Photography, 6/30, 1 – 4 PM with Tyler and Carl of MB Studios

Join us for pet portraits!  Stop by the store and see the great portraits these guys have taken again & again!

Free sitting, a minimum of 6 poses, and a CD for $30.
